Hey ALL, looks like I was too ambitious, but I really wanted to meet. I moved over the weekend, and even after getting things organized this weekend, I could not pull off getting things set up for you. I will reschedule for another day. Sorry for the inconvenience and late notice but I was up until midnight trying to get things sorted out and working. It is tough to move an entire home theater! David

Hi All, tonight's movie is Ugetsu Monogatari (1953) by Kenji Mizoguchi (97 minutes). It is on the British Film Institutes Best Films 1962 #4 (tied with Greed by von Stroheim) and 1972 #10 (tied with Bergman's Wild Strawberries.) It is currently in an eight way tie at 27th place. Godard has said he is "Quite simply one of the best film makers," and this movie is often found on Top Ten Lists of best films ever made. Thanks and I look forward to seeing you all! David

We will be watching Bergman's Persona, (1966) 85 minutes. Ranked #5 in 1972 on BFI's Sight and Sound Critic's Poll. Here's what Bergman had to say: "Today I feel that in Persona — and later in Cries and Whispers — I had gone as far as I could go. And that in these two instances when working in total freedom, I touched wordless secrets that only the cinema can discover." AND: "At some time or other, I said that Persona saved my life — that is no exaggeration. If I had not found the strength to make that film, I would probably have been all washed up. One significant point: for the first time I did not care in the least whether the result would be a commercial success..." See you Monday! David

Hi All, I am trying to get L'Atalante by Vigo. I has been consistently in the British Film Institutes Top Ten movies (2002 #15; 1992 #5/6; 1962 #10) 1934, 89 minutes run time. It is a film that is said to anticipate the French New Wave artists (Truffaut was an immediate Jean Vigo fan when he saw his this film). The cinematographer for this film, Russian Boris Kaufman, would go on to work on Hollywood films such as On the Waterfront. I believe we will find it is a film that we can connect with today (it is a romantic film and still accesable) and I look forward to watching it will all of you! David

Hey All, I finally secured a copy of Brief Encounter by David Lean (1946). Popularly considered Great Britain's #2 movie ever made, it hit the British Film Institutes top 10 in the 1950's. Based on a Noel Coward play and starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson, I felt this was an appropriate pick for this Valentine's month. Lean is a great director (Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Summertime, A Passage to India, Dr. Zhivago) and this film is one of his first. Does it still work for a modern audience -- I look forward to hearing what you all think! David
