Time for one of the great classics of Japanese cinema, Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon. Innovative for its time, it employed multiple points of view regarding a rape and murder in feudal Japan, as a samurai, his wife, and a bandit all meet up on one fateful day. The resulting trial depicts how truth is relative to whoever is telling the story, as the facts change with each witness--even a ghost! Toshiro Mifune chews the scenery in the starring role, but everyone's pretty over the top in this one. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, this print is a brand-new 35 mm restoration--ought to look mighty fine up there! Please note: We are meeting at 6pm for a 6:30 show. Film Forum usually draws a devoted crowd, so it's advisable to be early if you want to be sure to get a seat.
Optional quick bite afterwards at one of the nearby restaurants for those interested!
“ Not that many folks at Film Forum that night. Too bad our stalwarts had last-minute events that precluded their coming. My friend Marian and I both agreed that this new print looked wonderful. Afterwards, a tasty Indian repast on Bleecker Street where we discussed the film some more. ”
